Let’s start with the conclusion: No Technology is Ever Dead!

Any product or service that has been based on a mainstream technology, catering to the majority of consumers will, at a certain point in time, be challenged by a new way of fulfilling the same need. Technology keeps evolving.

However, it does not mean the initial (or prior) technology will disappear. Indeed, as the case of vinyl exemplifies, with the right dose of both time and marketing effort, the diminishing share of a certain technology can turn into an asset: the “old” technology can always be branded as an exclusive, niche, premium, and or special occasion/usage one. And you can still profit from it, if you cater to the right consumer profile.
